Previous hands-on experience is encouraged but not
required to take this course. However, students should be aware that
documented experience is required to take the examinations.
The course covers boilers, boiler design and
construction, boiler safety devices, boiler operation and
maintenance, fuels and combustion, pumps, pollution control
equipment, auxiliary equipment, steam turbines, condensers and
cooling towers, math & formulas, and Ohio licensing laws. The
training is designed to prepare students for the High Pressure
Boiler Operator or Stationary Engineer license exam.
The U.S. Department of Labor reports that the median
hourly range for stationary engineers and boiler operators in
Columbus, Ohio is $18.09–$22.62 per hour. Statewide, Stationary
Engineers make approximately $43,000 annually.
Students will benefit from the experience of our
instructor, Jon Harris, superintendent of the McCracken Power Plant
at The Ohio State University. Mr. Harris’s expertise in the industry
will prove invaluable when preparing to take the High Pressure
Boiler Operator or Stationary Engineering examinations.
